Bar Stools Buying Guide: How to Select the Right Height

When browsing bar stools, keep in mind that there are many height options available, which can make it tough to choose the right height and style for your space. Whether you choose fixed-height or an adjustable bar stool may be determined by your space and who will be sitting in it. It is important to consider all these factors as you shop - where it is going, who is sitting in it, and what your space requires.

Counter Height Chairs Swivel

Start by measuring the height of your counter or table; this will help you decide which general height you should shop for. The area between the seat and the counter is your thigh and leg room, so make sure it is sufficient for maximum comfort. As a general rule of thumb, you should aim for 8-12" of space between the seat top and the counter or bar surface. Remember that bar stool heights are taken from the floor up to the top of the seat, not to the top of the seat back (on models with backs).

Bar Stool Spacing

Another measurement to keep in mind along with the height is how much space you want to plan for between each stool. This measurement will determine how many you will want to buy. Standard placement allows for 26-30" of space, measured from the centers of each seat, so that people sitting can have adequate space to come and go, move around, and socialize. At the end of the bar, 8-14" is generally a decent amount of space to aim for from the edge of the counter top to the center of the last seat.

The Evolution of Bar Stools

The evolution of the barstool goes all the back to before the Cowboys and Indians. What started off as a tradition to sit around the fire soon developed into people sitting on logs around the fire, followed by stumps and then chairs. Barstools first made their notable debut during the saloon era. With small towns popping up, the idea of social life began to emerge and so did the bar stool. The bar or counter stool was a chair that was easy to get on and off and did not have to be moved or maneuvered to enter or exit its surface. Barstools were also practical in their height. The bars themselves had to be at least waist high to the bartender in order allow an easy pour for the bartender, and to create a big enough barrier to keep people from stealing the goods from behind the bar. The only problem was they needed a chair that was comfortable, practical, and high enough to reach the bar; enter the barstool. This stool was perfect in height and was easily accessible for everyone.

Comfortable Kitchen Seating Using Counter Stools

The one thing we knew we needed when we renovated our kitchen was more seating room. We have three kids who often have friends over, we tend to, like a lot of busy families eat and run. We needed a place where we could put kitchen counter stools in our kitchen. So we decided when we renovated our kitchen to add a very large kitchen island where we could put five swivel stools for our family and friends.

When you go online and look at kitchen counter stools and bar stools you can buy them by height, 18 inch, 24-28 inch, 29-34 inch and 34-36 inch. You'll also find a choice of metal, wood and swivel stools. You'll find leather, rattan, chrome/vinyl, stainless steel and rush seats. You'll find stools that are backless, stackable and stools with arms. You can choose from counter height and standard height and even extra tall styles.

There are many different brands of stools available, some of them are Holland, Regency, International Concepts, Hillsdale, John Boos, Alston, Richardson, Powell, Regal, Grace, Winsome, Koch and Cambridge.

Kitchen counter stools don't just only give you extra seating, they give you a way to enhance your kitchen and home decor. As I mentioned earlier we have a Tuscan theme in our kitchen. We have quite a bit of wrought iron throughout our kitchen, dining room and family room. We bought beautiful Hillsdale Tierra Mar bar stools. Although they were a southwestern style they went perfectly in our home. We like their rustic appearance and the fact that they are upholstered and swivel stools.

Counter Stools - There Are Actually Different Than Bar Stools

Exactly what is the difference between bar stools and a counter stools? Perhaps you have heard people use the term bar stool interchangeably with a counter stool, but there is a significant between the two.

You see, one of the counter variety will is approximately 24 to 26 inches high from the top of the seat to the floor, making them ideal for most (not all) kitchen counters that are 36 inches from the top of the floor. However, many counters are 40 to 42 inches off the floor, which happens to be the same as commercial bar heights. For that you would need bar stools that are about 30 to 32 inches high.
